About Pilates

Pilates is a holistic mind and body conditioning program developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It emphasises core stability by targeting the deep muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks, collectively known as the "powerhouse." The practice combines precise, controlled movements with coordinated breathing to enhance overall body conditioning, balance, and coordination, making it suitable for individuals of all fitness levels. Pilates exercises can be performed on a mat utilising gravity and bodyweight, or using specialised equipment like the reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair, and more for added resistance and precision.

There are some core principles to Pilates

  • Concentration: Full attention to each movement to ensure precision and effectiveness.

  • Control: Every exercise is performed with complete muscular control.

  • Centering: Emphasis on the "powerhouse" – the core muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks.

  • Flow: Movements are smooth, continuous, and graceful.

  • Precision: Each movement is performed with careful attention to detail.

  • Breath: Proper breathing is crucial, aiding in movement control and enhancing oxygenation of the muscles.

Regular Pilates practice can lead to a plethora of  benefits such as improved core strength, enhanced overall flexibility and range of motion, increased muscle tone, proper alignment and increased awareness of the body's posture, reduced stress, improved balance and coordination, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.

My story

I am Sowmya. I have always enjoyed physical activity but a chronic back ache caused a set back in my fitness journey. I discovered Pilates in 2012, as part of my rehab process, and have never looked back since. Pilates has been my constant companion in my life, providing me the strength, stability and support to continue with my daily activities and fitness regime. Having personally experienced the power of Pilates on both my physical and mental well-being, I wanted to learn more about the methodology. So I went on to train as an instructor and qualified from the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) to teach Matwork and Reformer Pilates. I also have a specialism in Ante and Post Natal Pilates and Pilates for Spinal Surgery.   I am passionate about teaching Pilates and love working with people to help achieve their goals.
