Hello

I’m Sowmya, and I’ve always had a passion for physical activity. However, a chronic backache temporarily set me back on my fitness journey. I discovered Pilates in 2012 as part of my rehabilitation and have never looked back since. It has been a constant source of strength, stability, and support, enabling me to maintain my daily activities and fitness routine. Experiencing firsthand the transformative impact of Pilates on both my physical and mental well-being, I was inspired to deepen my understanding and train as an instructor.
I qualified in Matwork and Reformer Pilates from the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI), with specialisations in Ante & Post Natal Pilates and Pilates for Spinal Surgery. Teaching Pilates is my passion, and I love working with individuals to help them achieve their personal fitness and well-being goals.

About Pilates
Pilates is a holistic mind and body conditioning program developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It emphasises core stability by targeting the deep muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks, collectively known as the "powerhouse." The practice combines precise, controlled movements with coordinated breathing to enhance overall body conditioning, balance, and coordination, making it suitable for individuals of all fitness levels. Pilates exercises can be performed on a mat utilising gravity and bodyweight, or using specialised equipment like the reformer, Cadillac, Wunda chair, and more for added resistance and precision.
There are some core principles to Pilates
-
Concentration: Full attention to each movement to ensure precision and effectiveness.
-
Control: Every exercise is performed with complete muscular control.
-
Centering: Emphasis on the "powerhouse" – the core muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks.
-
Flow: Movements are smooth, continuous, and graceful.
-
Precision: Each movement is performed with careful attention to detail.
-
Breath: Proper breathing is crucial, aiding in movement control and enhancing oxygenation of the muscles.

Regular Pilates practice can lead to a plethora of benefits such as improved core strength, enhanced overall flexibility and range of motion, increased muscle tone, proper alignment and increased awareness of the body's posture, reduced stress, improved balance and coordination, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.
